V-king 1.0 beta 2 release notes

Welcome to the 2nd beta release of v-king vj software. It is import that you read the release notes and the new manual carefully, even if you have already tried the first beta.

After this beta version there will probably be one more beta version, or the release version. This depends on the feedback we get from you.

In these release notes you'll find:

  • What's in this package?
  • Changes, bugfixes and additions compared to beta 1
  • List of known bugs
  • Things that will most probably be implemented in the next (beta or final) release.

What's in this package?

In the archive or diskimage that can be downloaded there is only the v-king beta application folder, installation instructions, a manual and the document you're now reading. The latest documentation can be found on this website. There's some testfootage here available for download to get you started as well.

It is also very important that you have Apple's QuickTime (version 6 or higher) installed on your system. QuickTime can be downloaded from Apple's website

Apple's QuickTime download page: http://www.apple.com/QuickTime/download/support/

Changes, bugfixes and additions compared to beta 1

Application (general)

  • V-king now has it's own icon
  • The .zip file of the previous beta (windows version) was giving problems with some unzip utilities. This should now be solved.
  • The performance (output framerate) of V-king got slightly better.
  • Automatic screen detection is improved. There was a bug that caused the output screen to be placed over the interface, making V-king unusable. This should be solved now.
  • Midi in module added.
  • Video In module added (for Macintosh. Windows users can use the PeteLiveFeed FreeFrame effect). But beware, both methods are still tricky. Read the manual.
  • GoWild! module added. With this module you can reroute the videosignal within v-king. For example, use the output of a layer as the input for another layer. And much more! just read the manual.
  • Memory management improved on MacOS X.
  • Output can now also be selected when the preview panel is in multimode.
  • Wavebox controller module's maximum wavelength is now set to 9999 ms
  • Mouse Scrollwheel support for popupselect lists. Windows only.
  • Several new keyboard shortcuts.
  • Accurate fader option.

File import and playback

  • Clips can now also be imported as a streamclip! These clips (video or flash) are streamed from disk instead of preloading them into ram first. This saves a lot of memory.
  • You can now adjust the importsettings via the newly added new importsettingspanel.
  • Ramclips that are imported at a bitdepth of 16 bits (which costs half the memory compared to importing at 32 bits) the quality is now much better because the clip is imported using dithering.
  • V-king recognizes and handles much more video formats now compared to beta1. the next release will handle even more.
  • When flashfiles are imported in streaming mode, there's a very nice new option: when you're playing a flashclip in a layer, you can pan spin and zoom this flashclip, using the vector data! this gives a much better result.
  • Support for scripted flash files (in streaming mode). Some flashclips are animated using a timeline, but there's also many flashclips in which the animation is controlled by actionscript. In most cases, V-king is now able to detect this. If not, you can use the option in the importsettings panel to force v-king to recognize a flashclip as scripted.
  • Most playback options are working now for streaming flashclips. Like playing them backwards and adjusting the tempo. For scripted flash files however this is limited to adjusting the tempo and starting and stopping the playback.
  • When going up one level in the filebrowser, there was an error when reaching the root or desktop level. This is now fixed.
  • Shortcuts (windows) or aliases (mac) to files are now recognized and handled correctly.
  • The filebrowser's add all button didn't work. This is now fixed.
  • If you want to import only one file, you don't have to click add first and then import, just selecting the file and clicking import is enough.
  • The status messages above the import-progress bar are now displayed with some delay, because sometimes the statusmessages followed eachother up to quickly to be read.

Effects

  • Added some new internal effects
  • Added FLASHMASTER effect to pan, spin and zoom flashclips using their vector information.
  • Improved FreeFrame support thanks to Thomas Hellesen. (Note: FreeFrame effects are currently available only for the windows version of v-king.)
  • In v-king beta1 PeteLiveFeed and PeteLiveFeed2 FreeFrame effects only worked when there was clip active in the layer. This is no longer necessary.
  • PeteLiveFeed works like a charm, but it makes v-king crash when you quit the application. That is why we put the PeteLiveFeed effect files in the Freeframe (disabled) folder by default.
  • FreeFrame effect files no longer have to be in the root of the freeframe folder to be recognized. They can now also be placed in folders within the freeframe folder, This way you can better arrange them.

List of known bugs

These three suck the most:

  • When the PeteLiveFeed freeframe effects are loaded, v-king will crash when you quit the application. Even when you did not actually use PeteLiveFeed.
  • When you activate a video input on the mac and the device isn't recognized, v-king will crash.
  • Sometimes the mouseclick stops working after activating a video input on the mac.

and these are the others:

  • On windows, files that are on the desktop, or somewhere in a folder on the desktop, sometimes cannot be imported.
  • On windows, ALT-F4 doesn't work yet. To quit v-king, use ctrl-q
  • the FLASHMASTER effect causes white bars on the left and right side of the clip when you use rotate.
  • When you switch have v-king active in the background and you type something in another application, v-king detects the keystrokes. For example if you type some spaces in that other application, v-king will think you are tapping the tempo and will adjust the tempo.

Things that will most probably be implemented in the next (beta or final) release

  • midi sync support
  • bank load/save/clear
  • save and edit preferences
  • minimize and quit button
  • we're not going to tell you everything ;-)

Again, we strongly advice you to read the manual before using v-king. You simply have to know the basic principles first to get the most out of v-king.
